They just keep coming to the surface

Happy Sunday from California! I was thinking about this concept of a beach ball as I was walking pass the pool this morning.

Have you ever tried to hold a beach ball under water in a pool? If you have not it is harder than you think, it keeps wanting to come to the surface and it takes a lot of resistance to hold it under the water.

This is a great metaphor for trying to resist our emotions and hold them in… They just keep coming to the surface and sometimes with a lot of force. They can even manifest into physical symptoms and it can turn into illness.

There are several ways we can handle our feelings:
Avoiding- Using avoidance tactics like disconnecting or buffering to avoid feeling an emotion

Resisting- This is where we keep pushing it down, like the beach ball

Indulging- Staying in an indulgent emotion like self-pity or confusion, not moving forward

Allowing- It is where you take a deep breath and feel the emotion all the way through

Learning to feel any emotion and allowing it takes practice. Start by becoming aware if you are feeling a negative emotion. Look for triggers like buffering and disconnecting.

Then ask yourself these questions:
Where do you feel it in your body?
How would you describe it to someone?
Can you name the feeling?

Try it on, the next time you are reaching for a cupcake or your hand is at the bottom of a chip bag, look to see what emotion you are feeling and allow it instead of trying to avoid it with overeating……

You are worth it, love!

I used to feel uncomfortable in my own skin. I would have thoughts around hating my body. I would walk in a room of people and wonder if they were thinking, “boy, she has gained some weight”. I would tug at my clothes and feel like I weighed a couple hundred more pounds than I did. I did not see what I really looked like. When I looked in the mirror, I had feelings of disappointment, failure, and disgust.

I would beat myself up around being a failure for being overweight. I would not take time for myself; my whole world was built around everyone else. I would not invest in me. 
I would never talk to anyone the way that I used to talk to myself. I asked myself this question, “Would I be my best friend”, and at that time I would not have been.

The way that I talked to myself, the way I broke commitments to myself, how I did not make time for me, and the daily beatings of not being enough or doing enough was not a best friend I wanted.

But I am my best friend. I am the most important person in my life. I am my bestie. Why did I think it was OK to talk to myself like that, put everyone else first, or continually break commitments to myself?

Sit with this question, would you be your best friend and if not, why not?

No one, I mean no one ever beat themselves thin. Learning to become your bestie is the absolute best thing you can do for yourself.

Learning to be kind to yourself. Learning to talk to yourself with Love. Learning to keep commitments to yourself. Learning to put yourself first, to invest in yourself, to put your oxygen mask on first.

I understand that we have been taught to put everyone else first, but it is wrong, it is a lie. You cannot fully take care of others when you don’t take care of yourself.

How do you talk to yourself? Do you keep commitments to yourself? Would you be your best friend?

I was always looking for the perfect bite!

I was always looking for the perfect bite. I wanted it to last as long as it could. I would take time to make sure whatever I was eating was perfectly cooked and at the right temperature. I wanted the perfect bite and then I wanted every bite after that to be as perfect. I would heat up leftover pizza in the oven because I wanted it to taste as good as the night before. I would warm up a chocolate chip cookie because I wanted it to be soft and warm.

When I think about longing for the perfect bite, the explosion in my mouth, it really is a longing for something else. It really is about trying to avoid feeling something. It is about wanting more pleasure and joy in our lives. It is about us trying to fill up a void, but food will never fill it up. I know you know this Love because we have all been trying to do it for so long.

Food is fuel for our body. That is, it. We have made it to be comfort, love, and everything else. But a doughnut is just a doughnut, it does not bring us comfort or love. It mostly brings us the exact opposite.

We must want more for ourselves than false pleasures. False pleasure is so temporary and always have us longing for more.

We have to add more joy, true joy. When I am creating or coaching, the joy I feel is out of this world, no doughnut could ever compare.

There is no perfect bite. Food is not comfort. When we tell ourselves that we just “love” food, it is just a lie we are telling ourselves, a belief that does not serve us. I know Love, this belief is deep. I just know another way; I know freedom from carrying the extra weight and finding real joy. I want this for you.

What truly brings you joy? What if we took all the food away and you got this magic pill that would give you all your nutrients, how much less joy would you have, what comes up for you at the thought of a magic pill vs food?

Who is your Future-Self?

Years ago, I knew my purpose. I knew that I was going to help women and learn how to stop the war we have going against ourselves. I told people 15 years ago, that one day this is what I would be doing. I wrote it down, I kept taking action, I kept going even through lots of failures.

I started taking action from my “Future-Self”. I wrote down who she was, what she would do, how she had changed. I know exactly who she is. When I want to give up, when I want to slip, I ask myself “What would my future-self do?”, “What would she do in this situation?”.

This helps me come from a place of transformation and abundance.

Who is your “Future-self”, the self that does not ever beat herself up, the self that is at her natural weight, what would she do right now? Have you ever thought about who she is?
