Facebook Live 21: Halloween and All The Things

Halloween is just around the corner and we’re officially in the holiday season. Halloween was always a time that I enjoyed when my son was younger, and I might have even loved it more than him because of all the candy and everything pumpkin-related. I could name a million other treats that come out during this time of year, and for me, it always brought an extra layer of obsession around food.

When I was battling with my weight, the holidays were a time when I spent so much more energy thinking about what I wanted to eat, especially things I normally might not indulge in, and I truly believed it was impossible to lose weight. For so many of you ladies, the holidays equate to a season of overeating, and I want to help shift your perspective today.

Listen in today to discover how, no matter your circumstances, it is possible to lose weight during the holidays. I know that you want to truly enjoy your holidays, to focus on being with your loved ones instead of obsessing over what to eat or not eat, and I hope this episode helps you do that.

If you’re ready to have the best holiday season ever, you have to join my Transform weight loss program. The doors are closing today, October 30th, so I urge you to do this for you, and to not wait until January so you can finish 2020 like a boss.

If you love this work and want to go deeper, take my free course, where I share my experience and the 3 tools that I used to get off the diet roller coaster. All you have to do is click here to learn more!

  • Why we think of the holidays as a tough time to lose weight.

Ep #57: What If I Fail Again?

What If I Fail Again?

How many times have you heard the phrase, “Failure is not an option?” This is something many of us have instilled into us, and it’s a phrase that I remember being told all the time. We think failing, making mistakes, or coming across challenges is a negative thing to be avoided at all costs, but today, I’m inviting you to see how it could be the missing piece to your weight loss success.

When we’ve spent years on the diet roller coaster, the thought of trying something new can be extremely daunting. We keep getting back on, trying the next new thing and failing, and so plucking up the courage to invest in ourselves yet again isn’t exactly appealing. But I truly believe that failing is the only way to your dreams, and I’m showing you why.

Listen in this week as I share three things you can do to make failure less scary. These tips will help disrupt the perfectionistic mind that believes any type of failure means the end of the world, and they will help you show up for the whole journey, even when you slip and make a mistake or don’t keep a commitment to yourself.

And here are this week’s transformational questions:

  1. What have you not done because you’re afraid to fail?
  2. What are you going to challenge yourself to do in the next 24 hours to take the next best action?

To celebrate 50 episodes, I announced that I would be doing a drawing for two $150 Amazon gift cards. All you have to do to enter is leave a review of the show on iTunes and then email me with the title of your review at shannon@bflycoaching.com. I can’t wait to read all your reviews!

If you love the podcast, I would love to have you come check out my Transform weight loss program. It’s my monthly coaching program where we take this work to a whole new level and you can learn how to lose weight for good. Doors close on October 30th, 2020 and will stay closed until 2021, so I hope you join me there!

What You’ll Discover:

  • Why the solution to weight loss is never outside of yourself.
  • How the fear of failure stops you from showing up.
  • Why I believe failure is the true magic to weight loss.
  • 3 ways to make failure less scary.

I’m going to give away the very first $150 gift card on episode number 60. So you know ladies, get your reviews in so you can be entered in.

So love, oh my goodness, this last weekend was amazing. The Transform Boss 2020 virtual event happened on Saturday. And I have to say, my team and I did so much preparation and it was worth every second of it. We had almost 70% of my Transform ladies show up, which is an amazing percentage of ladies.

And they showed up and they turned their video cameras on, and they were engaged, and they were there to really end self-sabotage. And I’m just so proud of them. I mean, so proud of them. And it was just a really amazing life-changing event and I’m just beyond proud of it.

But most importantly, I’m just beyond proud of my team. My team is amazing. And my ladies. My ladies just keep showing up and I’m watching them just transform and I’m watching them lose weight. But really love, more importantly, I’m just watching them live their best lives and really show up for themselves and challenge themselves and start to believe that it’s possible to live in a body that they love.

And it is so beautiful to watch. And we also had lots of fun, lots of laughter. There were some tears too, ladies, for sure. My son came on and he is so cute ladies. I can’t even deal with it. I’ve actually watched the replay of my son and my part. I don’t know, four or five times.

Because I love him so much. And he was so handsome and so confident and just, I mean, he was very nervous, but you would never have known. And then my husband and I did a segment, and it was super cool. And my husband was super sexy and sweet and all the things. And so it was just super fun.

And then at the very end, my daughter-in-law came on with all my grandbabies and my husband and my whole team and Jen, our project manager and mentor, she flew in from Utah. And so she was here too. And it was just one of those days that it went by way too fast and it was just a really great day.

So for all of my Transform bosses who are listening, I’m really proud of you and I know some ladies had to miss it and they’re asking for the replay. And the replay is going to be up very shortly. And then it’ll just stay as a bonus in the Transform membership site.

So any lady who comes in to Transform will always be able to watch it. So again, a really amazing event. The ladies are learning all about how to end self-sabotage and then also how to plan for the holidays. So the holidays are here. They are here. We have Halloween and then we go right into Thanksgiving, and before you know it, we’re going to be in full holiday Christmas, and then New Years.

That’s just how fast this year is going. So let’s get into this show, my love. I want to share a story of when I found this process that I now teach. But to be honest, ladies, I was not fully sold yet because I had been on the diet roller coaster for so long, and being on the diet roller coaster, I was always searching for the next diet, the next food plan, the next gimmick.

And I was learning about coaching, I was learning about changing my mindset, but it was scary. And I did love coaching, I’ve coached in my day job for 25 years, and at that time, 20. And I did love coaching, but you know ladies, I was scared.

I was scared that I would fail. And this whole mind shift change sounded like a lot of work, and honestly, I was just scared I would not be able to do it. Because when you’re on the diet roller coaster, we’ve learned, I’ve learned, I had learned that the solution was outside of me, that it was in a diet plan that was all about the food.

And so learning to change my thoughts and beliefs seemed like a really foreign concept. So here I was, my mother had just passed, I had gained a lot of weight during the nine months before she passed, and then the couple months after she had passed.

And I had already been kind of doing this work for a couple years, I would say. Dabbling, just learning about it. But I put it all on the back burner when my mother and mother-in-law became ill. And so here I was and once again, I decided I was going to find something that would work.

And so I decided that sugar and cheese, they were my problem. And so I started Googling, I started seeing all the different diets and all the different things out there. And something popped up for a hypnotist.

And I just thought, wow, I’ve never tried one. This is it. This is it. I’ve never tried this. So I found this really sweet lady and I went to a hypnotist because I wanted to stop eating cheese and sugar, and I thought they were my problem. Ladies, I just want to clue you in. They were not the problem. It was my mind.

But I thought cheese and sugar were my problem. So I go to this lovely woman and do the whole hypnotist thing and I kind of convinced myself – I remember actually leaving her house because she worked out of her house, and I remember leaving her house and going to the grocery store like, yes, I don’t want cheese, I don’t want sugar.

I mean, when I think about it now, I was just kind of not telling the truth to myself. And so I went back to her a few more times and at the end of it, I would say I still wanted cheese and sugar. And though the sessions with her – I mean, it was like meditation, so they were very relaxing.

And actually, she worked with me on some other things that I really enjoyed. But it didn’t solve my problem. And it wasn’t the solution. And why I tell you all of this ladies is because we look for these solutions outside of ourselves and then we try them, we get excited, and then when they don’t work, we think we’ve failed.

And then we go into the process of beating ourselves up, telling ourselves that we’re never going to be able to do it and that we’re failing again. And we do this over and over and over and over. It’s the definition of the diet roller coaster.

We go back to the same things that we’ve tried because maybe one time or two times they worked. I remember Weight Watchers, there were some times where I would lose some weight. But I always ended up gaining it back.

And so what would happen after doing this roller coaster ride for so many years, I thought it was me. I really believed that I was a failure and that I was broken. And what happens over time, and this really happened with me was I just didn’t even want to try anymore.

I was so scared of failing, and when I think about this fear of failure and how I used to view failure, I used to be so scared of it. I used to make failure mean that I wasn’t good enough or I wasn’t smart enough or I wasn’t capable.

So what I found was I wasn’t even showing up. I wasn’t even trying. And I see this with ladies who have been on the diet roller coaster and maybe it’s you that I’m talking to. And you’ve been on the diet roller coaster for so long that the thought of trying something different really scares you.

Because you’re scared that what if I invest myself in this and what if I fail? And you know love, this is what I know. I really believe that the way to lose weight in a way that feels like love for good is by changing our mindset and changing our thoughts and beliefs and throw a few brain hacks in there.

And one of the things – because I see this when I have new ladies who join Transform. A lot of times they’ve failed before so many times that they’re scared they’re going to fail again. And so I see this with my students. And so they start to kind of shut down. They start to stop showing up.

And we pull them back in and we have these amazing mentors that help. And what I teach my students is that failure is something that we should love, and failing is actually the way to our dreams and goals.

And you know, I’m not sure why I remember the saying failure is not an option being told to me, but I completely believe the opposite. I think we were taught that failing, making mistakes, having challenges, that it’s a really negative thing.

But ladies, what if failure was really the magic? What if the only way to your dreams, your weight loss goal is through failure? I teach my ladies this all the time and I talk to them a lot about it. I teach them a process on how to fail and how to have a strategy and how to disrupt the perfectionistic mind.

And you know, we are going to fail, and we are going to make mistakes, and I think it’s what keeps us on the diet roller coaster. Because when we fear failure, then we either don’t want to show up or we quit. And so here are 3 things, my love, that you can do.

Number one, fail on purpose. Write down all the ways that you could fail. Actually plan ways you will, like eat off plan, not make your realistic plan. Run through the drive-through when you had already planned on cooking dinner. Whatever it is. Maybe you’ve set some movement goals and a couple days a week you miss your movement goals.

And then number two, take the next best action. So whenever you make a mistake, whenever you have a challenge, whenever you don’t keep a commitment to yourself, whenever you “fail,” don’t let that one mistake turn into a week of it. Just stop and take the next best action.

So an example of this would be you make your realistic plan, you say this is what I’m going to eat, and then someone brings cookies into the office, and so you eat off plan. You eat the cookies.

And instead of letting that one overeat, that one going off plan, letting it turn into a week off plan, you just take the next best action. You get right back on the plan that you had made for yourself, and then you make another one for tomorrow.

Because this is what happens. When you eat off plan or you overeat, if you beat yourself up or you give yourself the excuse, “Well, I ate these cookies so I might as well screw it and eat everything,” if you do that, it just keeps you stuck.

But if you look, okay, I ate off plan, I ate the cookies, so for dinner, I’m going to eat what’s on plan. It’s such a small minor shift in the way that you think, but taking the next best action is just one step forward to getting you off the diet roller coaster.

And then number three is show up. Love, I tell my ladies all the time, just show up. Whatever that looks like for you. Maybe it’s once a week, maybe it’s once a month. But show up. And when you don’t want to show up for yourself, that is when you need to dig deep, my love, and show up.

Starting to create the habit of showing up for yourself. I know that when ladies start showing up for themselves, honestly, they think they don’t have time. I’ve told myself this lie too. I need to show up for everyone else, I need to do for everyone else.

But what happens is you become resentful. You become mentally exhausted because you’ve never recharged your own battery. And so what I see is when my Transform bosses start showing up for themselves, they become better wives and partners and mothers and friends.

Their capacity to love themselves grows and then their capacity to love other grows too. And it is just one of the most beautiful things. So I just challenge you to show up and show up for yourself. And when you tell yourself that you’re too busy, you don’t have the time, it’s too hard, just know that those are just lies that you’re telling yourself and that is what’s keeping you stuck. Not anything outside of you.

The only thing between you and all of your dreams and your goals are your thoughts, my love. So today’s transformational questions are number one, what have you not done because you’re afraid to fail? I want you to think about this in your whole life. What have you not done in your career, in your relationships, with your weight loss because you’re afraid that you might fail?

And then number two, what are you going to challenge yourself to do in the next 24 hours to take the next best action? My love, so good. So I want to tell you ladies because this is going to release on the 28th, Transform closes on October 30th and it’s closing until 2021. So I just invite you to check it out.

And next week, I’m going to talk about keeping it simple and why it’s so important in weight loss. Alright my love, bye for now.

Facebook Live 20: Why You Are Overweight

Our feelings have a huge impact on our lives. And the truth is, I believe so many of us ladies have actually spent a lifetime of learning how to push down our emotions and keep them away from the surface.  So in this episode, I want to talk about why trying to ignore your emotions is actually disconnecting you from your body and keeping you overweight.

Have you ever been having a conversation with someone and they said something that irritated or infuriated you, and the next thing you know, you’re standing in the pantry sizing up the bag of cookies? Yeah, me too. You might think the answer is to not have junk food in the pantry. But I have an even better solution.

Join me on the podcast this week to discover why I know without a doubt that we can experience even the most difficult, tragic emotions without needing to buffer with food. And believe me, when you can learn to feel all of the feelings, that’s when life truly begins.

This Sunday, October 25th, I’m starting a free training all around the holidays. This time of year is amazing and wonderful, but there’s also a lot of pain, frustration, and stress that we experience around our weight. I will be doing four days of free training from October 25th through to the 28th. Click here to register!

My Family Makes it Hard for Me to Lose Weight

I know that some of you really believe that losing weight is hard or even impossible because of your families. Maybe you cook for your entire family and don’t want to have to eat separately, or you have treats in the house for your kids, or maybe you have a friend who always brings over sweets or chips or pizza.

You might believe right now that you simply can’t have the urge to eat all those things, and ladies, I was in the same boat. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve cleaned out my entire pantry so I wouldn’t overeat, and today, I want to show you that there’s really a different way, my loves.

Join me this week as I lay out three common scenarios that my clients share with me about losing weight and their families, and how you can work around each of them without completely drowning in self-pity. Learning this mindset work is going to help you live your best life full of real pleasure, without food being at the center of everything.

And here are this week’s transformational questions:

  1. When it comes to your family and food, what decisions ahead of time do you want to make?
  2. What real pleasure could you plan instead of eating with your bestie, your partner, your husband?

You are listening to the Weight Loss for Successful Women podcast with Shannan Christiansen, episode number 56.

Welcome to Weight Loss for Successful Women, a podcast for women who are ready to break the diet cycle and end their struggle with weight for good. Here’s your host, Fortune 100 executive and Certified Life Coach, Shannan Christiansen.

Hello love. I am so happy to be back with you. I am excited about today’s show. I hear a lot of this from the ladies, that the reason why I overeat is my family. And we’re going to dive in today and I’m going to give you a couple ideas of maybe something different you can try.

But as always, first, I want to give a listener shout-out. This is where I’ll read a review of the podcast every week. And this week’s listener shout-out is to Jen. She wrote, “Love the podcast. Comparison happens far too often and can steal our joy. Funny how the person we are usually comparing ourselves to is comparing themselves to us. Thanks for the reminder. Love how short and impactful these podcasts are.”

Thank you so much Jen. You know ladies, I love these reviews. I love that you ladies are listening. And if you love the show, please rate and review it. We do have a contest happening right now and so if you rate and review the show, you’ll be entered into receive a $150 gift card. And I’m going to give away two of them.

So rate and review on iTunes or Apple. And then email me at support@bflycoaching.com with the title of your review and you’re in. Now, the one catch is it really does have to be on iTunes or Apple, but you know love, we got you.

So loves, oh my gosh, I have to tell you, by the time you’re listening to this, the Transform Boss virtual event will be over. And you know loves, we have been working, my team and I, because we really want to make this event so special for our Transform ladies. But I have to tell you something that happened tonight.

So we are practicing. And so my son came over just to make sure that all of the cameras, all of the things, the lighting, everything was kind of set up. And this is the second time that we’ve gone through everything. But we want to do it three times, just to make sure everything is good for Saturday.

So my son came over and we started messing with our main camera. And it was not working. It was not working. And so we messed with it for an hour and it just was not working. It kept – it was all kinds of problems.

And so I was like, okay, well, the event is in two days. So we are going to Best Buy. So my son and I pack up, we get to Best Buy, they don’t have a large selection of cameras. But we’re like, okay, we chose one. It’s a Sony. It’s probably okay.

But we also needed to get this part. And they didn’t have the part. And so we had a very nice young man who was helping us, and he found the part like, 40 miles away. I look at my son and I’m just like, holy moly. But yes, we got to go do it. And my son looked at me and he said, “Mom, I got you. I’m going to run and go get the part. You go home.”

And so such a sweetheart he is. So basically, I came home, he went actually and picked up his wife and my grand babies, and they took a family trip to the other side of town to get this one part. You know loves, this is how it works. This is how it happens.

And I think preparation is so important, but who knows on Saturday. You just never know when you’re dealing with technology. That is the one thing I know for sure. But I am just so excited to spend this time with my ladies. The event is five hours. I know it’s going to go super-fast. But I’m excited to teach and to show them that they can end self-sabotage.

And they can get through the holidays without gaining weight. I think it’s just one of the things that ladies are always struggling with, and it’s the holidays. And being able to enjoy all of our family traditions and all the fun without making it this full binge session. Because I really do think though the holiday seasons are my favorite time of the year, they’re busy and there’s some stress.

And I know for so many of you ladies who are listening, there’s stress, there is all kinds of emotions. I miss my mom during this time of the year the most I would say because we had so many family traditions together. And so it brings up a lot of emotions.

And so I think it’s important, ladies, that as you go through the holidays, keep listening. Because I for sure am going to do a couple podcasts on the holidays and if you’re one of my Transform bosses, we’re going to do a lot of stuff around really getting through the holidays and being able to deal with all of the emotion so it’s the best holiday season ever.

So let’s dive into today’s episode. I know that some ladies really believe that losing weight can be hard because of their families. Because they cook for their families, or they have sweets in the house, because they have kids, or their partner or spouse or even friends, maybe roommates are always bringing sweets or chips or pizza into the house.

And they believe that they can’t have an urge or have that stuff around or they’ll overeat it. I can’t tell you how many times I would go on a diet, when I was dieting, and I would clean the cupboard. You ladies know what I’m talking about, right?

You will throw away all the cookies and all the goodies and all the things, and your family is like, oh my gosh, she is going on another diet. Yes. And I’m just saying loves, there’s just a different way. The process that I teach and what I think is so important about this process is that you really learn to desire food less.

When I was losing weight, I had to learn how to desire food less. I had to learn how to handle an urge. And my husband, I have to tell you ladies, we always have ice cream sandwiches in the house. He loves them. I just actually bought two boxes of them a week ago and they’re all gone.

And I didn’t even eat one of them and it’s so interesting to me because I didn’t even have the urge to eat them. And this is what is possible when you learn how to lose weight by changing your mindset. If you’re on the diet roller coaster and you’re on a diet, and you’re restricting and you’re doing all the things that diets do, focused on the food and not your mindset, then you’re always going to be wanting all the things.

And so that when your family, your husband brings up chocolate, you’re going to have a tough time with it. And part of this process is learning how to desire food less, become connected with your body, so that you know how food feels in it.

The reason why ice cream sandwiches, I could eat it or not, and if I want one, I put it on my plan, is because mostly they don’t feel that great in my body. And I love eating food that feels good in my body. I love feeling energized from food. That is part of this process.

So I want to talk through three scenarios that I think happens. The first is you have to cook meals for your family, and you don’t want to eat separately. So love, eat what they’re eating. Stop when you’re satiated. Or if you really don’t want to eat what they’re eating and you want to eat a separate meal, then do it.

You are in control. You get to decide. Don’t have a little pity party for yourself about how you can’t eat what they’re eating. You want to eat food that fuels you, that actually is so good. We think that we’re being deprived when we’re not eating something that is contributing to us not having the body that we want.

I’m just here to say when you eat food that is not on your plan, or food that you’re eating past full, and you’re overeating, you’re depriving yourself of all your dreams, all your goals, of a body that feels like freedom. Not eating an Oreo cookie, that’s not deprivation. Deprivation is when you are deprived of living your very best life.

I want you to really think about this, love. Because we think that if our kids are eating Oreos, that I can’t have it, poor me. I mean love, I know, I did this for a really long time. But I’m just here to say that what you’re really depriving yourself of is a body that you love, a body that feels like freedom, movement that feels good, food that fuels you, that energizes you.

Yes love, when we think about it differently, then things start to change. So number two, your spouse, partner, your friends, they bring the treats and they want you to eat them. Love, food is always going to be around. It just it. For most of us, it just is.

I mean, I’m not going into work right now, but one day I will go back, and there’s always food. There’s always treats. You know I’ve talked about Marie bringing me donuts on Fridays. And I can politely say no. This is what I’m saying. You always get to decide. You always get a choice.

And you want to be able to decide on purpose how you want to fuel your body. And I know that many of you and I had this too, I had one of my friends who – we were kind of eating buddies. I’d say eating besties. And as I started going through this process and learning something different, our relationship had to change a little.

And not in a bad way. We just had to find other things to do. And think about that with your spouse, your partner, your friends. How do you build a relationship with them where it’s not centered around food? Where you find other joy and other pleasure with them, instead of just food?

This is how you begin to build a life that is full of real pleasure. Not false pleasure like a cupcake. I mean, I like a cupcake but it’s just really false pleasure.

So if your spouse or your partner or your friends bring treats, or mostly what you do with them is eat, you go to restaurants or you have food brought in, I really want you just to decide on purpose how you want to handle that. If you know that your spouse is always going to bring home pizza on Friday nights, put it on your plan. Put a piece.

And then make sure that you have lots of veggies or lots of other things that fuel you so you can fuel your body. You always get to decide, love. You always. I think the worst thing – one of the worst things that we do as women is we give our power away to other people.

And I am saying you always have a choice and you always get to decide. And when you can decide ahead of time, when you can decide on purpose, it just makes everything that much easier.

Number three, there is food for my kids and husband in the house and I cannot resist. Love, allow the urge. Food is going to be in your house. And every day, you get to make a realistic plan. And when you make your realistic plan, then if it’s not on your plan, you can make a decision. Well, those cookies look really good, I’m going to put it on my plan tomorrow.

You always get to decide how you’re going to fuel your body. And you don’t have to empty your pantry out and you don’t have to get rid of everything. You can learn how to desire the food less and how to handle the urge, especially when you’re making a realistic plan. Because you always can put whatever you want on your realistic plan.

And as you start to connect with your body and you start to feel how food feels in your body, you will notice that you want more fuel in your body. I do. I love food that fuels me. I love feeling good. I love feeling energized. And you will notice over time and through this process that you will want more fuel food than not.

If you’re just beginning on this process of changing your mindset, again love, meet yourself where you’re at. And it really isn’t about your family or your friends or your children. It’s about you learning to change your thoughts and beliefs around the food that fuels your body.

You got this, love. You just have to decide that you’re worth this work and that you can handle an urge, you can allow an urge. And you want to choose food that feels good for your body more than not. It’s not that you’re never going to put non-fuel food on your realistic plan. You totally are. I totally do.

But mostly what I eat is food that feels good in my body. And I never blame anyone else for the choices that I make because I always get to make the choice. I always get to make the decision. You got this, love. You really do.

Today’s transformational questions are when it comes to your family and food, what decisions ahead of time do you want to make? And then number two, what real pleasure could you plan instead of eating with your bestie, your partner, your husband? So good, my love.

Next week, I am going to talk about all things fear. I mean, we’re coming up on Halloween and all, so I thought we’d talk about it. Alright my love, bye for now.

Facebook Live 19: How to Know if You’re on the Diet Roller Coaster

The diet roller coaster is something I talk about frequently here on the podcast, and it’s a key part of what I teach. But the years of weight gain and weight loss you experience can seem like they meld into one long journey of being unhappy with your weight, and so it can be confusing to know whether you are on the diet roller coaster or not.

We try to tell ourselves that we’re not on the diet roller coaster to give us the illusion that we’re in control, or that the reason we’re carrying extra weight is because of our genetics or life circumstances. The search for quick fixes and your subconscious limiting beliefs are leading you down the path of dieting forever, and I’m sharing the biggest reasons we end up on the diet roller coaster so you can identify a way off of it for good.

Listen in today as I highlight 8 of the biggest indicators that you’re on the diet roller coaster. After years of buffering with food and trying new “magical” diets, trusting ourselves can be challenging. But I want to show you how to start building that trust back in yourself so you can ultimately lose weight in a way that feels like love and the best work you’ll ever do.

This year’s Transform Society event will be virtual on October 17th. I’m going to be teaching you how to stop self-sabotaging and how to create a plan to get through the holidays without gaining weight, while still enjoying all the things you love about this time of year.

This event is only for members of the Transform Society, so come join us thereIf you sign up today, you’ll receive a Boss Box full of things to help you on your weight loss journey.

If you love this work and want to go deeper, take my free course, where I share my experience and the 3 tools that I used to get off the diet roller coaster. All you have to do is click here to learn more!

Ep #55: The Reality of Food

The Reality of Food

Have you ever bought a weight loss program or started following a plan where you didn’t enjoy the food? I’m going to guess this happened every time you started a new diet because this was definitely my experience. As much as you might think you love food, the reality is that you’re probably not truly tasting it, and this is what dieting has done to us.

Paying attention to the food we eat is the path to getting off the diet roller coaster for good, and this means learning to reconnect with your body. Following someone else’s plan of what’s “healthy” is leaving you disconnected from whether you’re satiated or even enjoying what you’re eating, and slowing down to identify what feels good to you is going to be transformative.

Join me this week as I show you two ways to start reconnecting with your body. The reality of food is that it feels different to each and every one of us, and exploring how food fuels you and trying different foods will mean no longer subjecting yourself to restrictive diets and foods you don’t even like.

And here are this week’s transformational questions:

  1. What are 3 foods that you want to slow down and really enjoy and taste?
  2. What 3 foods do you want to test and see how they feel in your body?

To celebrate 50 episodes, I announced that I would be doing a drawing for two $150 Amazon gift cards. All you have to do to enter is leave a review of the show on iTunes and then email me with the title of your review at shannon@bflycoaching.com. I can’t wait to read all your reviews!

If you love listening to this show, I would love to have you come check out my Transform Weight Loss Program. It’s my monthly coaching program where we take this work to a new level and I help ladies figure out how to lose weight for good. And, we’re having our first live virtual event this October! Click here to check it out, and I can’t wait to see you there!

What You’ll Discover:

  • One of the biggest reasons I believe diets don’t work.
  • What you’re ignoring when you’re following someone else’s food plan.
  • How to identify fuel foods, neutral foods, and non-fuel foods.
  • What learning to lose weight for good is all about.
  • 2 ways to reconnect with your body and see how food feels in your body.

You are listening to the Weight Loss for Successful Women podcast with Shannan Christiansen, episode number 55.

Welcome to Weight Loss for Successful Women, a podcast for women who are ready to break the diet cycle and end their struggle with weight for good. Here’s your host, Fortune 100 executive and Certified Life Coach, Shannan Christiansen.

Well hello love. So happy to be back with you. I am excited about today’s show. And you know, today we’re going to talk about food, and I think about all the diets that we’ve tried where we’re eating foods that maybe we’re not that crazy about.

And so I’m going to talk a little bit about it today and how to stop doing it and how to actually enjoy your food more. So good. But first, I want to give a listener shout-out. This is where I’ll read a review of the podcast every week. And this week’s listener shout-out is to Kelly Anderson.

She wrote, “I have to keep reading this over and over. It does consume our minds. My journey is my journey. It’s funny, I would also compare when other people fell off their weight loss journey and I would confirm we were all doomed. LOL. This is excellent. I love doing this work.”

Thank you so much Kelly. I loved it. I loved the review. And ladies, I love those reviews, so if you’re listening and you love the show, please rate and review it. I would so appreciate it. You can also subscribe so every Wednesday and Friday I am just in your podcast app, wherever you listen to podcasts.

And also, we still have the contest going on. So if you rate and review the show, you can be entered in for a $150 gift card. I’m going to give away two of them. The details are you have to do it on iTunes or Apple. So if you have an iPhone or if you have a Windows computer, you can just download iTunes. And then just email me, support@bflycoaching.com with the title of your review and you are in.

So ladies, BFLY has been busy. We just finished a five-day challenge, and we are preparing for our virtual event on ending self-sabotage. I mean, it’s been so fun. My husband and I are also preparing our three-year business plan. And the first piece honestly how we’re doing it is just looking back at the last two years of business and seeing our success and our opportunities.

And honestly love, as I’ve been going through this, I have been so emotional. I just am so proud of how the business is growing and what we’re learning. When I look at how many ladies we’re helping, I just get emotional. I cry.

I am so proud of our team too, and how they’re growing, and they’re just doing mind-blowing things. Building a business, becoming an entrepreneur, I mean, it really has pushed me. But it has been one of the greatest joys in my life. I love the Transform bosses, I love each and every one of them, and they inspire me every day.

So ladies, let’s get into the food. So early in my diet career, I went to one of those prepackaged diet programs. You know the ones I’m talking about. It’s where they give you the little frozen – and actually, other meals too that just sit in your cupboard because they have so much preservatives in them.

And I was excited. I was going to do it, I was going to try it, and this was going to be the thing that worked. And I was going to just eat the little meals and I would finally be skinny. Finally losing my weight.

So I went to the appointment, I got my food, and I bought a week’s worth of food and I thought I get snack too, okay, I’m in, I’m going to do this. So I brought home my few bags of these little packaged meals and I heated up one of the meals, and ladies, it was a no go.

It tasted terrible. So I ate the snacks and I basically threw everything else away. It was the last time I did that. There are foods I like and foods I don’t. I really enjoy fresh organic home-prepared, I mean, that is the best. I love when my husband cooks. He is an amazing cook, and he cooks the best food.

And I have to tell you ladies, he made these mahi-mahi tacos with mango salsa. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. It was so delicious. And you know loves, I have to say, the reason – one of the reasons that I believe that diets don’t work is because we’re following someone else’s food plan.

We’re shoving in foods that we don’t like and don’t feel good in our bodies. I remember being on this diet and it was all about calories and low fat. And so I was eating fruit and yoghurt for breakfast because it was part of it. Low calorie, low fat.

It was “healthy.” But love, it felt horrible in my body. I would have a stomachache after I ate it. I did this with so many “healthy” foods. They did not feel good in my body, and I could get those same nutrients in other foods that felt great in my body.

But we never stop to see if our bodies actually like it. Instead, we’re focused on some diet plan that someone designed who doesn’t even know us, or how our bodies function or work. And every body is different. Like every body is different. Just like we have different fingerprints, our bodies are different, and we need different things.

And you know love, instead, we’re just counting carbs and points, and it keeps us disconnected from our bodies. And so there are foods that fuel us. I believe there are foods that are neutral. They don’t really energize us and make us feel like rockstars, but they don’t give us a bellyache either. They’re just like of like, felt good, I got some nutrients.

And then of course, there are non-fuel foods. And those are the ones that we eat them, and we feel lethargic or we feel tired, or we feel really hungry very quickly after we eat them. Learning to lose weight for good is about deciding to become the scientist of your own body, learning what fuels it, learning how to eat non-fuel food and not overeat to a bellyache.

I eat non-fuel food. I’ll eat a cookie. I’ll eat a cupcake. I’ve talked about this previously, but fruit actually doesn’t feel good in my body, but I like fruit. And so sometimes I’ll put it on my plan and even though it doesn’t feel good in my body, I know it’s non-fuel, I know that it’s going to give me a little bit of a stomach ache, and I’m going to be a little hungry after.

And so I just pair it with a fuel food, which helps some of the dopamine hit. It also helps to satiate me more. I see ladies who fear food. They are so restrictive because they’re scared if they eat a cookie, they won’t be able to stop. They’ll eat 10.

And love, I just want to say, this is what dieting has done to us. We either are indulgent, eating everything, or we’re so restrictive. And every once in a while, we find that middle place, but mostly, we’re in the extremes. And I teach my Transform ladies to not fear food and to learn how to eat without completely overeating or completely restricting.

So love, we’ve eaten food that does not fuel us, that does not taste good. And then we sit and wonder, where do we even begin with it all. We have become so disconnected with our bodies because we’ve either totally been off overeating, or again, on some restrictive diet.

I see this with my new Transform bosses. They want to know what I eat. They want me to tell them what to eat. But love, I teach them something different. I teach them how to learn how food actually tastes, how it feels in their body, how to really enjoy it.

I teach them how to reconnect with their bodies, how to feel the signals that we have in our body, that tell us when we’re hungry and when we’re full. We do this worksheet in Transform where ladies slow down, and they actually taste a particular food. Then they know if they even really like it or not.

I cannot tell you how many Transform bosses realize that there is food that they do not even like that they thought they did. I did this with myself and I was surprised there were foods that I would eat that when I slowed down and really taste them, I was like, yeah, that’s not really that great.

Like popcorn. I know, I know it’s hard to believe. So paying attention to the food that we eat is how we get off the diet roller coaster. One of the things I challenge my Transform bosses with too is to try things that they thought they did not like.

I have to tell you ladies, I used to hate brussel sprouts. I disliked them so much. But a couple of years ago, one of my friends convinced me to try them. She said these are all the rave, and she was going on and on. I was like, okay, I’ll try one. And it turns out I love them.

And I eat them all the time and I absolutely love them. I love them crispy too. Our tastebuds actually change over time, and also as you start to eat more fuel food, you’ll want higher quality fresh food. A Pop-Tart just does not taste the same to me.

If I want something sweet, I want it to be homemade and really delicious like a good helping of tiramisu. And by the way, five years ago, I did not like tiramisu. I would have rather had the Pop-Tart, and now it’s the complete opposite.

Now I love it and when I have it, I slow down, I really enjoy it, and when I start to feel like I’m satiated, that I’m satisfied, I stop. So why is all of this important? We have spent so much time obsessing about food and our weight and the craziest part, my love, is we don’t even know how it really tastes.

We don’t even know how it feels in our body. So what to do? Number one, start with a couple of things you eat and see how it feels in your body 10 minutes after you eat it, and then 30 minutes after you eat it. Do you feel energized? Do you feel amazing? Do you feel satiated? Or do you feel lethargic? Do you feel like you’re starving 30 minutes later?

But sometimes maybe you just feel neutral. Eat more foods that feel good in your body. That is one of the biggest a-ha moments I had was learning how food actually felt in my body.

Number two, slow down. Not to see when you’re full actually, but to see how it tastes in your mouth. Ladies tell me all the time how they love food, but they’re not even enjoying it. They’re standing at a kitchen counter, eating it in two minutes. They’re sitting in their car, going through a drive-through, rushing to eat it before they get home because they don’t want their husband or kids to see that they had extra food.

I know love, I have done this so many times. Really see how it tastes and how it feels in your mouth. Slowing down is about enjoying your food. When you love something, you pay attention to it. And I will challenge you, do you really love food? Are you slowing down? Are you enjoying it?

To lose weight for good, we must learn to reconnect with our bodies. We have to know how food fuels us and also try different foods. I think it’s the most exciting part. Losing weight does not have to be this restrictive cardboard box frozen meals.

It can be amazing food that tastes good and fuels you. So today’s transformational questions are, number one, what are three foods that you want to slow down and really enjoy and taste? And number two, what three foods do you want to test to see how they feel in your body? So good. I’ll see you next week. I am going to dive into families and how we think they affect our weight loss. Bye for now, love.

Facebook Live 18: End Self-Sabotage

An age-old problem that comes up for many of us who have been on the diet roller coaster is self-sabotage. I cannot tell you how long I self-sabotaged in my own life, across all areas, from weight loss to relationships. As humans, we all have subconscious thoughts about how we only deserve so much happiness, success, or thinness, and today, I’m helping you identify these thoughts.

Part of the work of getting off the diet roller coaster is in finding our limiting thoughts and beliefs, or our perceived ceiling of success. I believed that I could never go under 200 pounds, and as soon as I did, I would start overeating. If you can relate, I’m giving you some clarity on why this might be happening, and a process to help you get off the hamster wheel of self-sabotaging.

Listen in today as I show you why self-sabotage happens and how to end it for good. Most humans do this in various areas of our lives, whether it’s in our careers, relationships, or with our weight, and I’m shining a light on the missing piece so you can show up differently and get off the diet roller coaster.

This year’s Transform Society event will be virtual on October 17th. I’m going to be teaching you how to stop self-sabotaging and how to create a plan to get through the holidays without gaining weight, while still enjoying all the things you love about this time of year.

Ep #54: I’m So Scared I Won’t Follow Through

I’m So Scared I Won’t Follow Through

I recently received an email from a beautiful lady that just touched my heart. She shared with me that she wanted to join Transform and start losing weight, but she was scared she wouldn’t show up for herself. If you’ve ever been on the diet roller coaster, you can most likely relate to this fear, and if so, this episode is for you.

Over the decades that I was trying to lose weight, I had been sold all the things, tried all the methods, and failed so many times that I just didn’t trust myself anymore. I’d broken my commitments to myself over and over, even while I was implementing the work that I’m now teaching you ladies. But I’ve learned a few things that I know will help you.

Join me this week as I share 3 things that I’ve learned since getting off the diet roller coaster and began maintaining my weight loss. It’s so normal to lose all trust in yourself and struggle to keep commitments, but love, you do this for everyone else in your life, so it’s now time to do it for you.

And here are this week’s transformational questions:

  1. What fear do you have about learning to lose weight in a different way?
  2. What one thing can you do for yourself to start showing up for yourself?
  3. Who is your tribe?

To celebrate 50 episodes, I announced that I would be doing a drawing for two $150 Amazon gift cards. All you have to do to enter is leave a review of the show on iTunes and then email me with the title of your review at shannon@bflycoaching.com. I can’t wait to read all your reviews!

You are listening to the Weight Loss for Successful Women podcast with Shannan Christiansen, episode number 54.

Welcome to Weight Loss for Successful Women, a podcast for women who are ready to break the diet cycle and end their struggle with weight for good. Here’s your host, Fortune 100 executive and Certified Life Coach, Shannan Christiansen.

Hello love. So happy to be back with you. I am loving spending a little time with you today. I had a beautiful lady write me just a beautiful email. And in it, she was sharing with me her fear that she will not show up for herself. She wanted to join my Transform weight loss program, but she was scared.

So it inspired me to talk about it on this episode. If you’ve ever been scared of not showing up for yourself, then this is a must listen. But as always, I want to give a listener shoutout. This is where I read a review of the podcast every week, and this week’s listener shoutout is to Laura.

She wrote, “I’m enjoying listening to you about your journey and helpful things to try. These tips and lessons have been so helpful. I’m dedicating myself to this journey with these tools you have supplied for me. Thank you so much. Hugs.”

Well Laura, thank you so much. I love these reviews. I love that you ladies are listening. So if you love the show, please rate and review the show. I would so appreciate it. And ladies, I have a contest going on right now. If you rate and review the show on iTunes or Apple, so any iOS device, you will be entered to win $150 gift card.

Yes, $150 gift card. I’m going to give away two of them. All you have to do is rate and review the show on iTunes or Apple. And then email me at support@bflycoaching.com with the title of your review and you are in.

So ladies, we just finished up a five-day challenge and I love the challenges. They are super fun. What I love most is how ladies are learning to show up for themselves, that they matter, that they can lose weight.

We’ve had so many false promises and been on so many diets that weight loss feels hard, and honestly like a nightmare for many of us. But there is a different way, my love. It all starts with simple steps to change your mindset, with a few brain hacks included. You know I love a brain hack.

We have had a full month already, and it’s just the beginning of October. Lots of fun stuff. And we’re planning for our Transform Boss virtual event. I cannot wait. I just can’t. I am so excited about it. It’s October 17th and it’s a members only event.

I’m going to teach my ladies how to stop self-sabotaging their weight loss and how to lose weight during the holidays while still enjoying all their favorite traditions and eating all the things. I for sure am going to have Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas dinner, I’m going to bake cookies with my grandkids. If you have not given up yet on 2020 and you don’t want to start 2021 heavier than you are today, go to bflycoaching.com/join to learn more.

So I had this just beautiful lady email me. She wrote that she just wanted to join Transform, but she was super scared she would not show up for herself and she would join and then she would end up quitting, and she would waste more money.

This email touched me so much because I think anyone who has been on the diet roller coaster has felt like this. I know I did. I had been on the diet roller coaster for decades. I had been sold all the things, tried all the things, and had failed so many times that I just did not trust myself anymore.

I had broken so many commitments to myself over the years. I didn’t even think twice about it. I want to tell you a story of when I was in the midst of what I teach now. I loved my teacher and was implementing everything that I had learned, and I was learning from other teachers, I was feeling pretty good, I was losing some weight, and this was a little bit after my mom had passed.

So I had gained a ton of weight and I was sitting around the 240, 250 mark. And I was finally coming out of the fog, feeling great, and then October rolled around and then I started to slip. I started to go back to old habits. I started with what I did every holiday season. Eat everything.

I would start mid-October, and I didn’t stop until January. I always gained weight during the holiday season. And this year in particular, I also got really sick with bronchitis. I was still pushing down emotions. I was still letting Lizzy and my habit brain take over.

I had this habit of giving up every holiday season, of putting myself on the back burner. I ran myself ragged and was missing my mom. So instead of feeling all the emotions, I was pushing them down by keeping myself so busy and eating sugar cookies. Well, all kinds of cookies.

I had broken commitments to myself yet once again. But I did know there was a different way because remember, I had been learning this already, and I had already lost some weight. So I decided I was going to keep on learning, even though I had failed for a bit.

I had hired a coach and I kept showing up with my teacher. I did not give up. I did not quit on myself. See, I’d been doing this work for a couple of years and again, even though I had gained some weight during the holidays, I knew what to do. I knew how to keep showing up. I knew how to not quit.

It’s hard to believe that that was five years ago and what I’ve learned and now teach is how to keep showing up, how not to quit. I am off the diet roller coaster. I’ve maintained my weight loss. I’ve learned a couple of things that I want to share with you.

And so the first is to keep showing up. This is the only thing I ask of my ladies in Transform. Just keep showing up no matter what it looks like. Consistency plus time equals results. It’s like compound interest.

Even small actions over time will equal results. Even if you go backwards for a bit, you still make progress in the long-term. It’s kind of like if you hold a stock for many years, it may go up and down a bit, but over time, most of them earn money.

And number two, quitting means you have completely given up. Even though I was overeating during that holiday period, I had not completely given up. I was still doing part of my process. Even though it was a difficult time for me, I still did one thing. I still was learning. I still was reaching out.

So loves, even if you’re in this time right now that you feel like you’re struggling, just do one small simple thing. Maybe it’s making your realistic plan, maybe it’s getting more water in, maybe it’s getting more sleep. You will be amazed at how one small simple thing can help you lose weight.

And then number three, find your tribe. I cannot tell you how important this is. Weight loss can be so lonely. To find success, you must find a tribe of women who know what you’re going through, who can help you when you’re struggling, who can pull you back in when you want to give up on yourself.

Loves, it is so normal to not trust yourself if you’ve been on the diet roller coaster for years. We have tried these restrictive diets that are focused on the food. We have broken commitments to ourselves. But love, you know how to keep commitments. You do this for everyone else. You know how to keep a commitment.

You just need to learn how to start keeping them for yourself. And I just want to say it one more time. You know how to keep commitments. You keep them for everyone else. You just need to learn how to start keeping them for yourself.

And I do want to say, the lady who wrote me the email, she did join Transform and she’s doing amazing. Your success is just on the other side of your fears and doubts. I know loves, your success is just on the other side of your fears and doubts. It’s so good.

So today’s transformational questions are number one, what fear do you have about learning to lose weight in a different way? Facebook Live 17: Planning for Weight Loss During the Holidays

I have seen so many ladies wishing this year away. It is not lost on me that 2020 has been tough. In fact, I don’t know if there are words to really describe the mess that 2020 has been. But in this episode, I want to offer you something a little different.

There are a little over 90 days left of this year, and time is precious. And still, we tell ourselves we will get to working on ourselves when the time is more convenient. I worked like this for years and it resulted in me being a prisoner in my own body. And my loves, that is not what I want for you.

Join me on the podcast this week to discover how to finish 2020 strong. I’m sharing how I have struggled at this time of year in the past, and what you can do to avoid falling into old habits and dismissing the end of the year as unimportant.

What You’ll Discover:

  • How we give up at this time of year without even realizing.
  • Why we need to take ourselves off the backburner.
  • How I would always self-sabotage around the holidays.
  • What you can do to finish 2020 strong.
