Facebook Live 34: Why You Keep Starting Over and How to Stop

On this Facebook live I will be talking about how to get off the diet roller-coaster and meeting yourself where you are at.  This all or nothing thinking, I was either on or off.  “I will start again tomorrow.”  This happens because we have dieted for so long and followed food plans for so long that we want to be perfect. We go from eating all the things to eating chicken and salad. This is just not realistic, not a long term solution.  We feel restricted and then say to ourselves “I will start tomorrow,” and go into last suppering and eat all the things. 

You have to meet yourself where you are – you can’t go from eating all the things to full restriction or even some restriction. Your brain will go into crazy mode and you will start sabotaging yourself.  The realistic plan is a tool that meets you where you are at. How to stop starting over is meeting yourself where you are at. The realistic plan teaches you how to be realistic and not idealistic, keep commitments to yourself, and break the diet mentality. Ep #70: The Power of Practice

Can you believe we are at episode #70? We will do something big for #100!  Today I am diving into the power of practice.  This shows up in many areas of our life.  When we practice anything over and over again, it becomes automatic – something that we just do.  Our habits are automatic things we do – like brushing our teeth, we don’t think about it, or make a decision about it, we just do it.  Our brains work on automatic 95% of the day.  If we can do things over and over – practicing them – they become automatic.

In this episode I will teach you the power of practice – how changing your mindset with just 1 or 2 new thoughts/beliefs can become automatic.  How this can change in all areas of your life, but most importantly get you off the diet roller-coaster for good!  We will talk about how Transform Weight Loss Program is the tools and understanding, but also the practice and implementation of the tools.

A podcast for women who are ready to break the diet cycle and end their struggle with weight for good. Here’s your host, fortune 100 executive and certified life coach Shannan Christiansen. Hello love, so happy to be back with you.

I am excited about today’s show as always. Can you believe we are at episode number 70? Wow! I can’t believe we’re only 29 episodes from a hundred. We are totally going to do something big for a hundred. I’m telling you, something big. So today I am going to dive into the power of practice. You will not want to miss this one.

So many ladies fail at losing weight because they do not understand the power of practice. We are almost done with January. I can’t believe it. Time does just go so fast. It has been gorgeous here in Arizona. I’m sorry if you’re somewhere else where it’s cold, but seriously, we are having the best winter. It is warm and the sun is shining.

We have been out hiking and walking. It has just been so nice. So wherever you are, I’m sending you lots of warmth and love from Arizona. So today’s episode is about practice. I know you’re probably wondering how that relates to weight loss, but it really does show up actually in many areas of our life. When we practice anything over and over again it becomes automatic. It becomes something that we do. I watched this interview once with Michael Jordan and he was talking about practice and how he looked at it. He showed up in practice just like in the game and because he had practiced it so many times, it was just like muscle memory, and when he was in a game, he did not even have to think about it. It was automatic.

That really is what our habits are. They are automatic things we do. It’s kind of like when I brush my teeth every morning, I never have to think about it. I don’t have to make a decision on it. I just do it. It’s automatic. Our brains live on automatic up to 95% of the day. Yes love, 95% of the day our brains are just in automatic mode. So, if we can do things over and over, if we can practice them, they become automatic. I talk about mindset change, and I am sure, especially if you’re new to me, you have this question, Shannan, how do I change my mindset? It seems overwhelming, but changing your mindset is just practicing new thoughts and beliefs.

I think about Sharon, she’s one of my transform ladies. She had these thoughts and beliefs about herself. For most of her life. Many, many, many years, she thought she could not lose weight, she was not tech savvy, that weight loss was hard, and so on and so on. She had all of these limiting beliefs about herself.

She joined Transform, and she started with one or two new thoughts, new beliefs that she wanted to believe about herself. And she got coaching to help explore the thoughts that were holding her back. And then she just kept practicing. She kept doing it over and over again. She’s in maintenance now after losing 116 pounds, yes, 116 pounds, with Transform.

She actually runs study halls for us. And I tell you when she runs the tech for them. And I remember her and when she very first came to transform, there is no way when she first came to transform that she ever would have believed that she would be running study halls and helping women and running the tech for them. But that is the power of practice.

See, understanding something and practicing are two different things. You can understand something, but if you don’t practice it, you’ll lose it. Or you’ll never even begin the change. This is what The Transform Weight Loss Program is. It is the tools, the understanding, but it’s also the practice and the implementation of the tools. I give ladies the tools and then help them practice over and over and over again so that it becomes automatic.

Here’s an example like, you know, a funny one. So I love British baking show. My husband and I have watched all the seasons, the holiday ones, we love it so we can watch the great British baking show. I can understand how to make a souffle, but it is very different than actually practicing and making one. See, I do my fundamentals, my basics of weight loss every day. And I’ve set myself up for success. I don’t have to think about them anymore because I’ve practiced them over and over again. I make my realistic plan, drink my water. I eat food that fuels me. I pay attention to this beautiful body of mine. And because I’ve practiced this so often, it is now automatic.

You can understand how to change your mindset. You can understand what food fuels you, but until you actually practice it, it will not become automatic. This is one of the ways that ladies stay stuck on the diet roller coaster. They stay in the “understanding” phase and they do not have the support. They need to practice and implement it to go from understanding to practice.

There are a couple of things that you need. Number one, you need to take action over and over again. This is the practice part. And then number two, you need support through coaching and community. When you get stuck, when you want to give up, you need a tribe, a tribe of women who understand what you’re going through to support you, to help you and to inspire you.

So the transformational questions are one, what are you just “understanding” and not implementing or practicing? Number two, what support do you need to go from understanding to practicing so that it becomes automatic.?

Facebook Live 33: Your Future Self and How She Can Help You Now

On this Facebook live we are going to talk about one of my favorite topics. Tonight we are talking about Future Self.  Everything that you do today is for your future self – good or bad.  I.e., If I make my realistic plan and eat on plan, that is a positive thing for my future self. If I don’t make my realistic plan and I eat 4 cupcakes, that is also for my future self, only not so positive. 

When you think about your future, what do you want for yourself one year from today? You can’t wait until December 26, 2021 to take action. When we don’t’ look up and think of our future “her” what we do today affects her, and we lose out.  We can either reap the rewards of our actions or reap the consequences. 

Don’t ever give up on you! Everything you do today, everything, is for your future self.  It is not always the big things that get us to our future self, but many small things – showing up every day, doing great work, building relationships, caring about other people, making my realistic plan, reflection work, being kind to myself when I had a failure. It was the daily grind that helped me to lose weight, not some magical diet plan.  This is the secret to the universe. What do you want for your future self? What small action will you take for her?

Ep #69: Decisions and How They Impact Your Weight Loss

Literally changing from the inside out. I see this with their weight, with their relationships, careers, they are dreaming again. We asked ladies before we open to submit their before and after pictures. And I cannot believe how many ladies did. And now these ladies are showing before and after pictures, you know, to the public, they have me in tears.

These ladies, I am so proud of them. I was just talking to one of our transform members, Tammie, and she told me that she finally hit Onderland. She has lost 40 pounds with Transform. She has not been this weight in over 21 years before her son was born. I remember when I first started working with her and she told me that she could not get under 210 pounds.

She would sabotage her success and now look at her. I just have so much love for Tammie and I can’t wait to see her future self. So, today we are going to talk about decisions and we make so many of them every single day, small insignificant decisions like brushing our teeth or driving to work or what to have for dinner too big life changing ones.

We make so many decisions every day that our brains get tired, it can feel like decision fatigue. So, because we’re making so many small decisions, when it comes to decisions that will affect our future self many times we will not make that decision. We kind of play around in the puddle. We go back and forth and we loop on it for days, for weeks, even months.

Even though way back in our minds, we know exactly what decision we were going to make. When I was starting this business, I knew I wanted a membership community. I knew that I didn’t want to be a high-end one-on-one coach. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just not what I envisioned. I really wanted to help women lose weight as many as I could.

But when I started my business, I thought, well, this is how I quote “hould do it.” So, I started with one-on-one high-end packages, thousands of dollars to work with me. I knew what I wanted to do, but I was looping in what I should do. So, the first nine months of my business, I was prolonging what eventually I did anyway.

I share this with you because so many times we let should, or we stay in indecision when we know exactly what we want to do. How many times have you been surfing the internet for weight loss programs, the new diet, looking for a food plan? I did this so many times searching for the quick answer, the quick fix some magical food plan, some magical pill.

Even when I knew that quick fixes didn’t work, I went back to the same national program at least 13 times. I knew that it did not work for me long term but I didn’t want to make the decision and commit to something different. Do you have decisions right now that you want to make, but you’re not making them because you’re afraid, or maybe you believe that you quote “should be doing something else?” Are you looking for the quick diet fix because you’ve not decided to commit to doing something different?

Here are two tips that I’ve learned that helps me stay out of indecision. Number one, identify it. So I know my triggers when I’m going to a worst case scenario, you know, love when we go to all the worst things that could happen. Or I’m looping in my mind on something that I want to do, or I’m telling myself, quote unquote, “should be doing something.” Also, when I find myself researching the same topic over and over again. Loves, it’s just a trigger to know that I’m sitting in indecision because mostly I know exactly what I want to do.

Number two, love make a decision. There is no right or wrong decision. There just is a decision. There is good and bad in everything. There are consequences, good and bad of every decision we make. So just make it. Decide. Go down the path. You can always figure it out. So, when I need to make a decision I look at the good and bad.

Then I decide, and then love, I commit to do it. I see this when Transform Ladies have decided that they are going to get off the diet rollercoaster. They make a decision and then they are committed. They’re committed to learning, to failing, to doing whatever it takes to move forward and to stop this diet, rollercoaster.

Love, this is the one thing I know for sure. We get this one life and we don’t know for how long, what decision are you going to make today for you? And the transformational questions are one, what decision do you need to make that is causing some chaos in your mind right now? Number two, what are the good and bad consequences of making that decision? And number three, what do you need to do to decide and commit to that decision right now?

Ep #68: Have You Felt Like You Have Been Eating Against Your Own Will?

Welcome to the second podcast episode of 2021. We are already half-way through January, I cannot believe how quickly the time passes. I am so excited to be doing the Future Self Workshop with my Transform Ladies tonight. It is so important that we dream, envision and know who we want our future self to become. At times when I feel like not showing up, or giving up I think of my future self and ask “what would she do?” If you haven’t yet listened to the Future Self Podcast, it’s a good one, especially for the beginning of the year. Do you ever feel like you are eating against your own will? You are eating even though you feel full. Eating when you are inside telling yourself to stop. I’m excited about today’s show as always. This is, you know, the second podcast of 2021. We’re already halfway through January. Can you even believe it, so crazy. Today I’m going to dive into how, when we overeat, it can feel like we’re eating against our own will. And I’m going to give you three steps to overcome it.

But first as always, I want to give a listener, shout out. This is where I read a review of the podcast every week. And this week’s listener shout-out is to Dana Allen. Shannan, I wanted to write and thank you so much for everything you did to help the Transform ladies this holiday season, especially the extra podcast series and our holiday challenge. I can honestly say that for probably the first time in my adult life I had a whole new way of thinking around food celebrations and traditions.

In years past my holiday overeating started at Halloween eating with kids and grandkids and candy. And this went all the way through New Year’s Eve. I always had a resolution for the new year of getting healthy and losing weight, but that never occurred this year. Thanks to you and all the wonderful ladies I’m in control during this holiday season.

I enjoyed my time with my family and focused on them and not obsessing over food. The best part, I didn’t gain weight. That’s right. I’m so thankful to you. Dana Allen. Oh, Dana. She is one of my Transform Bosses. Thank you so much. It is such a joy to have you in Transform. And I just have so much love for you.

Can you even believe it? My husband and I went on our first date of 2021. I know our first day date, we went out in public. We went to an outside restaurant. It was great to be outside and, you know, see the other humans. I really do miss them.

We are having the most beautiful winter here in Arizona. Last winter was super cold and I’m sure if you listen to the podcast, you heard me complaining about it. But this year we are having a lot of 70 degree days and it’s just gorgeous.

And I love, you know, warmer days for sure. So ladies, I I’m excited because tonight I am doing a future self-workshop with all my ladies who are in Transform and I cannot wait. I love thinking about my future self and what would she think and how every day today, everything that I do is really a gift to her. A gift to my future self.

Loves, there are times I want to give up. I want to pull the covers over my head and binge Netflix. There are times I don’t want to make my realistic plan, move my body or show up for myself. This is when I’m reminded of my future self. What would she do? Well, I know she would show up. So if you haven’t listened to the future-self podcast, go back to episode 14. It is a good one, especially at the beginning of the year.

So on the day that this releases, Transform Weight Loss Program, it’s our opening day. We have been closed since October and I am super excited to welcome in a whole new group of ladies. I love watching transformations and watching ladies blow their own minds.

So, onto today’s episode. So, I want to ask you a question. Have you ever felt like you were eating against your own will? I was thinking back to this time where I had started a diet and you know, I was starting, I was feeling excited. I had the motivation. I really believed that this was the time that I was going to lose weight.

I was going to follow the program, go to the meetings. I had these, you know, fantasies that I would become one of their group leaders and share my before after pictures, I was all in. I went out, bought all the food I needed. I had my journal to track all my points. I had a plan. This was the time.

 

And I continued to fantasize about how I would look in this killer outfit, how I would be so confident and have all my dreams. I mean, I was in it. I was looking online at all the before and after pictures, I was so inspired. So, like usual on a Monday I began. I had my lunch prepared. I knew what we were going to have for dinner I, this was the time loves.

This was the time I was all in. Have you ever felt like this where you’re just you, you got this right? But then it was nacho day and nachos were a big thing at my work. And they came around with the cart, but I resist it. I felt strong. So I passed it up. I felt so good. I felt like I got this.

Then later that afternoon, I had a meeting with my boss and he was not happy about something. So, I felt irritated. And I just continued throughout my day, pushing down the irritation. And by the end of the day, I felt exhausted. I had planned on making dinner, but I was feeling so tired and I was still feeling super irritated.

I felt like I had gotten in trouble that day. So, on the way home, I stopped and picked up fast food. I justified that I could still fit it in my points for the day. Right. That negotiation that goes on in your head, it was going on seriously in my head. But then I started eating and then I was in the pantry snacking.

I felt like I was eating against my own will. I knew that I desperately wanted to lose weight, but I felt like I could not win out over my own self. I mean, go back, you know, 12 hours. And I was so excited. I was in this was the time and then a stressful day happened. So, then it led to three weeks of back and forth negotiating every day on whether or not I was within my points total.

And I would go to the meeting. And every week I, that I went to weigh and I gained weight. And that my love is when I vowed to never diet again, why does it feel like we’re eating against our own will? Love, it’s because food has become our go to relief. When we’re feeling stressed, when we’re feeling tired, run down upset, we reach for a cupcake chips, something fried, something sweet.

And what is going on is our brains were actually craving a dopamine hit. And we’ve given into it so many times over so many years that it has become automatic. It’s just a habit that we in our brains. This is why dieting can feel so hard. And why, when you’re dieting, you feel like there’s so much mind chatter around it.

It’s basically how we’re wired. I teach my ladies in, transform all about our brains and how we’re wired. Because when you understand it, then I believe you can use your brain for you, instead of feeling like you’re doing something against your own will. There are three simple steps. I want to teach you just to introduce you and how you can combat this.

This is introductory, and I go way deeper with my ladies in Transform. But I want to give you something today because I know how frustrating this can be. The first step is just to begin to notice what triggers you to feel like you’re eating against your own will. Is it stress? Is it tired? Is it weekends? Is it night?

I know that it sounds simple, but just beginning to notice your triggers, it starts to pull your brain from this automatic habit mode to where you’re more conscious and you’re using a different part of your brain. The second step is once you notice that you’re overeating, you’re negotiating to overeat, right? You’ve been in negotiations with yourself to overeat something off plan, right? I’ve done this so many times.

Once you start to notice that you’re either in the middle of overeating or you’re in that kind of negotiation process with yourself, ask yourself, what am I feeling right now? Just by stopping and asking yourself this very simple question, again, it’s bringing you back from the automatic brain. What am I feeling right now?

And the third step is to allow yourself to feel the emotion. Feel irritated or angry or sad or happy, maybe excited, maybe because sometimes we eat even when we’re feeling positive emotions. So just allow yourself to feel the emotion. And this is the key without taking action, without moving, without doing anything, just allowing it, allowing the emotion to be in your body without taking any action.

Notice what that feeling feels like in your body. Allowing an emotion to be in your body. Instead of eating to push it down can help you begin to stop eating against your own will. Every time you move from your automatic brain to your prefrontal, your thinking part of your brain, you will find it easier to stop overeating or even negotiating with yourself to overeat.

Ep #67: The Secret to Weight Loss – The 3 C’s

Happy New Year! This is the first podcast episode of 2021. As we look back at 2020, we may just want to decide that we’re forgetting the year even happened. We are taught that we should always strive for happiness but what that does is make us feel like something is going wrong when we have pain or fear or shame. Life is 50/50 love.

What I have learned is that we need to allow ourselves to feel all of the emotions. The positive and the negative ones. When we take the time to feel our negative emotions, the ones we usually push aside and don’t deal with, then what it does is helps us feel the positive ones at a higher vibration. Who doesn’t want that, right?

On this episode I will teach you the secret to weight loss. Don’t worry love it’s not another food plan where you have to restrict or workout for 3 hours a day. I call it the 3 C’s. There are three different components that are all necessary to losing weight for good and really live your best life in a body that you love. These have not only helped me in my weight loss journey but also in my relationships. It’s been life changing.

Hello, love the so happy to be back with you. I am excited about today’s show as always. This is the first podcast of 2021. Can you even believe it? I mean, so crazy. Today I’m going to give you the secret to weight loss, the three CS, but first I want to give a listener, shout out. This is where I’ll read a review of the podcast every week.

So happy and New Year love. I know that so many of us look back at 2020 and have lots of thoughts about it. Lots of maybe not so positive thoughts about 2020. It was a challenging year for sure. There was so much pain, loss, uncertainty, and fear. It was a really tumultuous year. I really do believe that our human experience is 50/50.

It is the balance. For sure, we have seasons that are more 70/30 or 30/70, but I believe it all balances out. What has really helped me with 2020 is seeing the good in it, but also allowing myself to feel the negative emotions about it, to cry, to feel all of it. I know that most of us were taught that our goal is to find happiness, but that keeps us feeling like something is going wrong when we have pain or shame or loss or fear. But all of that is part of it too. I say this, loves because I love a new year. I love beginnings. But part of what I’ve learned is to love the hard stuff to the middle and the end its learning. This has really changed my life changed how I feel about all the different emotions.

This is what I teach my ladies in Transform to love all of it and process all of their emotions because when you can feel negative emotion process, it, it also helps you to feel the positive ones to add a higher vibration. You actually will feel better because you will feel positive emotions at a higher vibration too.

In today’s show, I’m going to share the secret to weight loss, but I want to begin with my story. I was eight years old the first time I remember being overweight and that it was a problem. I remember feeling different and wanting to be thin like my friends so bad. I wanted that I wanted to have a body that I felt good at, and that I loved.

I would dream about how it must feel to live in a thin body to wear whatever you want it to run, to feel freedom and what it would feel like to love my body. All of this was a foreign concept to me, and it really led to 38 years of dieting and gaining and losing hundreds of pounds. Even weight loss surgery, but worse than the endless dieting was the way that I felt about myself and my body.

I had tried all of it. I had restricted. I had binged. I tried to eat balanced, try to hold out for cheat days. I tried all the national programs, gym memberships, personal training. I had weight loss surgery. I never hit my goal weight.

And within two years of it, I was back on the diet roller coaster and was on it for another eight years. I was gaining and losing weight in 2014. I declared that I was not going back to dieting or any of the national programs again. I knew that the solution was not in a food plant and I was going to figure it out.

I found my coach/teacher that year, but 2014 was a tough year for me. My mom and mother-in-law were both ill. And I did what I always did and put myself on the back burner. I stopped the work with my teacher. I dabbled over the next couple of years in her work. My mom and my mother-in-law passed at the beginning of 2015, I was processing grief and barely keeping my head above water.

In 2016, I started the work again. I had done a lot of work on processing. My mother’s passing and felt like it was time for me to begin the journey of losing weight for good, without dieting. And I was not going to place myself on the back burner anymore.

Over the next two years, I did the work. I went to retreats, hired a coach, joined several coaching programs and learned how to change my thinking and love, I lost my weight. See, it was not until I dug into the work on changing my limiting thoughts and beliefs, that it was able to lose and maintain weight loss, and really begin to believe that I was good enough and that my body was too.

It was coaching and learning how to change my habits and thinking. I knew that I wanted to take this work and share it with every woman I knew. So, I was certified as a Life and Weight Coach in 2018. In 2018. I started life coaching and I loved it. I’ve been coaching for over 25 years in business, but I loved working one-on-one with women.

 

All the work I did in 2016 through 2018 changed my life. Not only my weight, but my relationship with my husband, my career, my confidence, my ability to live my best life in a body that I loved. When I was losing my weight, I loved my one-on-one coaching that I was getting with my coach and all of the tools I was learning.

But the one thing that was missing was community. I still felt alone. We would have these in-person meetings a couple of times per year with my coaching program and it was the only time that I felt community. I knew that I, that women losing weight needed more of that. We needed other women going through the pain and failure I was having.

I believe the secret to weight loss and living your best life has three components and they are all necessary to lose weight for good and really live your best life. The three C’s of weight loss are Coaching, plus Community, plus Course, and course really are the tools. This is why I created Transform Weight Loss Program. It’s the secret to living your best life in a body that you love. So, I want to take a moment and go through each of the Cs.

So coaching number one, coaching is where someone asks you questions to help you uncover your own roadblocks. See our brains are complex. And so many times we don’t even know what our subconscious is thinking and how it’s affecting our actions and our results. Have you ever thought, why am I doing this to myself? Why did I eat that? Why is this my struggle? Being coach is one of the most powerful tools to help you uncover your obstacles and also, when you watch others get coached, it can have the same impact.

Number two, community loves we all need more community. We need positive supporting loving communities of women who know what we’re going through, who can hold us accountable, who can inspire us, who can help us through this journey. We have been doing this long enough alone, right? Community kind of like being with your best friends all of the time, where at any minute you can reach out and they’re there for you. No judgment, only love.

And number three course, the course is the roadmap to your journey. It’s the tools that will help you create new habits, actual practical application. So, you can change your habits, limiting beliefs and self- sabotaging behavior.

Have you ever thought, or do I begin? I have no idea how to start changing my mindset. That is where the course comes in. It is the roadmap to your success. These three components are the key to success. I know, because this is how I lost weight and how I’ve been able to keep it off and live my absolute best life. I know this because I watch women lose weight, change their relationships and live their best lives in Transform. Learning and implementing the three C’s. It is the secret. It is such freedom. I felt for most of my life, like I was in a prison of obsessing and dieting. I wanted the horror ride of the diet roller coaster, I wanted to get off. It is possible for you.
